Among the most famous names in Judaism of the 19'th century is that of the British communal leader and philanthropist Sir Moses Montefiore (1784-1885). Also prominent in American Jewish affairs, especially Jewish settlements. Original letter in his hand and with full autograph signature to Solomon Cohen of Philadelphia. 2½ pages from his home at "Grosvenor Gate, Park Lane [London] July 5, 5603" (1843). Montefiore thanks Cohen for sending him copy of a speech by Cohen's son Henry, in Philadelphia, and thanks him for mentioning his name "…by so respected and worthy a member of our religion. How delighted must you be to witness in your offspring the observance of our Sacred Law combined with so much talent as your son's discourse evinces. It leads us to feel confident that the Sacred Germ of our Holy Religion will disseminate its everlasting blessings throughout the world &amidst every prejudice and opposition will shoot forth its branches for the benefit of mankind…if I have been in any way of service to my brethren, I am most happy, and my gratitude to the Omnipotent Being, the God of Israel, the source of all mercy, can never cease…" and with other kind wishes to Cohen's family.
