A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Charles W. Manning, Co. B, 13th Mass. Vols., Head Quarters 5th Army Corps, 2 miles from Petersburg, Va., June 25, 1864, in part: "…we are likely to stay here several more before we take the line of fortifications in front of us. It is the last line before going into Petersburg…they are very strong besides which we have a ravine to cross just before we get to their works…our loss would be fearful before we can take them. There has been on egret charge to take them in which our Corps lost over 2,000 good men and gained nothing, since then there has been no fighting…only a lively picket firing and now an then a little shelling, but is don't amount to much if the men keep out of sight…if one of our men shows his head he is just about sure to get a bullet through it for the Rebs have got some bully sharp shooters and they us them too. If Grant cant get to Richmond this way I don't know how he is going to take it for this is the weakest side (if there is any weakest) and I don't believe he can drive them another peg this way. He may cut the other rail road and so cut off their supplies and starve the devil out, but we shall see. The 12 Mass. goes home today…at least they leave the front…I would like mighty well to go with them…they have been right along us so long…I am well and getting along Bully…Chas. w. Manning". VG
