An early Union volunteer's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., Camp Dennison, June 26, 1861, to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "In consequence of Uncle Dick not knowing how to direct your letter I did not get it until this week. I am in Company A, 6th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Militia known as Guthrie Greys. We are armed with the Enfield Rifle. We expect to go to Virginia. We are not fully equipped but will be today…although I do not profess to be a church member I have studied a good deal on the subject and always try to do right. I do not drink nor chew tobacco but smoke some…I never was in a house of bad repute…I assure you were it not for mother & you I would not feel any regrets to die at anytime for the Union. They discharged all 3 month troops and required [them] to enlist for 3 years or not at all…how are you getting along in the study of the law…K. N. Cowing…Company A, Sixth Regiment O. V. M."
