A early war-date Union merchant's letter concerning the enlistment of his young nephew Kirkland Newton Cowing, 2pp. 4to., written by D. L. Dickinson "Uncle Dick", on his commercial stationery, Cincinnati, Ohio, June 1, 1861 to Kirkland's brother Rufus Billings Cowing, in part: "…Kirk has been among the foremost of volunteers in our city and attached himself at first to Capt. Whittlesey's Company of Union Flying Artillery which went into camp at Mount Pleasant about six weeks ago…the company had been in camp about two weeks [when] information was transmitted that such companies could not be received into service. They disbanded and Kirk is now attached to the Anderson Rifles 2nd Regt. of Kentucky Volunteers…now at Camp Clay about 5 miles above this city. During this week all the companies in camp were called upon to enlist for three years. Whether Kirk has enlisted for that time I have not had intimation…life in camp seems just to suit him and I think the discipline will be of great service to him…had [I] not the care of a small family to detain and if it becomes necessary to sustain our cause with more strength and members I shall be ready whenever the calls comes…he spent last Sunday at our house and is in firm health…has not much facilities for correspondence in camp and is naturally a little indolent…D.
