Union volunteer's letter written on, 4pp. 8vo., "Onward To Victory" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., Beverly, Va., July 29, 1861, to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…we left L[aurel] H[ill] on Sunday July 21 and now are…encamped in the town on a vacant lot in Beverly. As a very strange occurrence we left Camp Dennison on [a] sunday, Phillipp [West Va.] on Sunday, pursued Garnet [on a] sunday and marched here on that day. We have heard of the affair at Manassas Junction and the first account gave a very aspect to our forces…said that we lost all of our batteries and 3000 men and our forces had retreated to Washington. The later report…was more encouraging and that was that our force were at Centreville with all our batteries…there are about 3000 men & 2 companies of cavalry here…expect to move before long…[July 31]…it seems very strange to be situated so far from a rail road and communication is not very regular…I hope that when we make an advance to the Junction it will be with a force sufficient to overpower all opposition. Maybe the disaster to our army will be for the best…many of the extremists of the north are aggilating (?) the slavery question again thinking maybe the war was at an end. I hope [so] for…this war will cost the U. S. enough blood & money will be lost to learn politicians & ministers…that the destiny of the U. S. is not so slight an affair…direct to me 6th Ohio Volunteers, Co. A via Grafton…". Unsigned. Last page a bit light, minor spotting and soiling, else VG.
