Union volunteer's letter written on, 4pp. 8vo, "Columbia, to glory arise" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., Beverly, [Va.], Aug. 21, 1861, to his mother, in part: "…I had just returned from a scouting expedition in which two…men were killed & two wounded. The particular are these 4 Union men gave information that the Secesh had a lot of cattle in the mountains. Our Col. sent out a company composed of men from different companies. We left camp about 8 ock in the evening of the 17th…the road…but a mere foot path leading over mountains and rivers…we rested till 6 ock in the morning. We continued forward. It rained all the while till about 5 o'clock when crossing one of the numerous rivers we were fired into by about 20 or 30 men. We dashed forward through the river and up the side of the mountain but they knowing the country…succeeded in escaping. We retreated about 3 miles up the side of the mountain carrying our dead and wounded with us…we buried our dead and returned to camp the next morning…arrived there about 8 o'clock when our regiment received marching orders to go forward and I having no shoes, they being worn out in crossing the mountains…the sergeant not having time to give me another pair I was left behind…there was something urgent as they went in about 10 mins….I got supplied with shoes the next morning…the regiment left everything behind…as there is about 100 of us left we will pack up and go after them. Garibaldi I learn from the papers is coming. I hope all patriots of all countries will unit and prove to the world that man is capable of self government which I think is the real question at issue…".
