Union volunteer's letter written on, 3pp. approx. 5" x 12", "Stick to the Stars and Stripes" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "18 miles from Beverly," [Va., n. d., but ca. mid Sept. 1861], to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…in my last I was at Beverly but on the 30th of Aug. our regiment received orders to…march…reached our destination a point 18 miles from Beverly & 7 from Huttonville where a force of about 5,000 men & 16 pieces of artillery had strongly entrenched…if [Robert E.] Lee chooses to come this way we can give him a warm reception…we have flanking batteries & rifle breastworks. We feel able to repulse 3 times our force. The next day…our regiment were ordered to march 7 miles in advance of our works to keep a road. We were out some 4 days and had a slight skirmish with the enemy's pickets killing two and losing none. Our regiment are now encamped in a beautiful grove on the banks of a mountain stream about a half a mile below the fortifications….the Hatteras affair…was a good blow for our side and I hope it will be followed up by a few such affairs…from the affairs of things…September and October will witness some heavy fighting…tell mother I have strong hopes that the war will be decided by spring…your affect. Bro, K. N. Cowing…". A great letter on a rare form of Union patriotic stationery. These two we are offering here in this catalog are the first ever we have encountered in the marketplace. VG.
