A wonderful Civil War letter, 4pp. 8vo., by New York City attorney and Harvard graduate Rufus Billing Cowing (1840-1920), New York [City], Sept. 18, 1861 to his mother, reading, in part: "…"…K[irk] seems to have perfect confidence in their ability to cope with any amount of rebels…Genl. [Robert E.] Lee with 15 thousand Rebels attacked the brigade which K is in and got badly whipped with a considerable loss to the rebels & very slight if any loss to our side. Things seem to be going on swimmingly in Western Virginia. Now it is coming cold weather our troops will be able to go down in the Southern States & that will…make the present war short. Everything seems to be going on favorably for the Union…by the first of Jany. we will have in the field 500,00 men…keep up good spirits everything will turn up all right after awhile…Rufus." VG
