Union volunteer's letter written on, 3pp. approx. 5" x 12", "Stick to the Stars and Stripes" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp Elk Water, [West Va.], Oct. 14, 1861," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…there is some talk of our regiment wintering here but all will depend on the success of our arms. I don't think Lee will attempt this pass again and i he does he will be met with enough men to foil him. The country around here is assuming quite a fall appearances…there are rumors in camp of the capture of New Orleans…I hope you will not have to enlist…the South have not the force as represented and if our Navy can take New Orleans and a few other posts it will play hobs with the Manassas army…there was a commission here from Cincinnati to take charge of any money we should want to send…I thought it would be the safest. If you should have to enlist will it not spoil you…[if] mother…had any use for the money she could have it with pleasure…K. N. Cowing…". A great letter on a rare form of Union patriotic stationery. These two we are offering here in this catalog are the first ever we have encountered in the marketplace. VG.
