Union volunteer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp Elk Water, [West Va.], Nov. 10, 1861," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…it has rained here for several days. Banks and the roads were so bad which was the cause of the delay…the great flank movement on the sea has at last started…I hope that it will produce the great result so much hoped for…the force under Reynolds still remains in its old position…with no prospect of any advance and no enemy within fighting distance and virtually ending the war here…whether we will…engage in a different field of operations is ha[r]d to say. The season is pretty well advanced…there has been no indications…devoting an intention to winter troops…it is the prevailing opinion that we will operate in a new field and is the wish of all the troops…Mr. Marsh was appointed by the city council to take charge of all money sent by the 6th Ohio…many of the boys have received letters showing a receipt of their money…K. N. Cowing." VG
