A wonderful Civil War letter, 4pp. 8vo., by New York City attorney and Harvard graduate Rufus Billing Cowing (1840-1920), New York [City], Nov. 23, 1861 to his mother, reading, in part: "…I should think that K. is pretty well provided for from the way he writes I…told him that both you and I were willing to help him all we can do…but he says that he is well provided for…they are watching after his interests in Cincinnati…the war is progressing and I am happy to say that we of the Union are progressing too. We have land about 15,000 men right down in the heart of Secessindom and have got lots of men ready to follow and…they are going to get enough of this war before it is over…we have God and right on our side and…I have no fear as to the result. We have about 600,000 men in the field now with a reserve of about 4 millions and when those wicked men have annihilated all these then they have destroyed our country & not before. I hope this will be a short war…I am studying hard and hope one of these days to make a lawyer & to be able to tend to your law case…K's going to the war will make K more healthy for…the last time I saw him he was a little inclined to be consumptive and was getting to be very round shouldered and this will make him as straight as a shingle…Rufus…".
