Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp Wickliffe, KY, Dec. 20, 1861," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…on the 10 of December the 6th, 41st, 51st Ohio & 15th & 17th Indiana left Louisville under Gen. Nelson…after a few days march we reached this place…where the 24th Ohio, 34th & 36th Indiana were. Gen. Nelson has command of us all and our brigade of the 6 & 41st Ohio & 5th & 17 Indiana are…under Haskill, the Col. of the 17 Indiana…Col. Ammon of the 24 Ohio has command of the 24th Ohio & 51st Ohio, 34 & 36 Indiana. The Greys are in fine spirits and ready to do their duty…we are now having brigade and division drill…Nelson is a strict general all goes on O. K. Our company has been further reduced by the promotion of 3 other of our comrades and we now are hardly a corporal's guard. Some of the boys are expecting commissions which will reduce us in numbers more yet…I will be satisfied to be discharged as a private next July if the war is over but I intend to do my duty…Cousin Albert was 1st Lieut. in [Nathaniel] Lyon's Body Guard…the field office of major of the 15th Missouri regiment was left open for him…but on the account of the death of Aunt Mary he could not accept. England…will not proceed to extremities and if she does all I can say is let us fight all the harder…K. N. Cowing…". VG
