A wonderful Civil War letter, 4pp. 8vo., by New York City attorney and Harvard graduate Rufus Billing Cowing (1840-1920), New York [City], Dec. 17, 1861 to his mother, reading, in part: "…Uncle Obed has left his family and home to fight for his country. K is now somewhere in Kentucky…his regiment has left Louisville…we have about one hundreds thousands men in Kentucky…we are going to have bloody work there before we get through….I see that England seems quite disposed to pick a quarrel with us and I am afraid before we get through this war with the South we will get into another with England & France…if worse comes to worse I am in favor of fighting them both before giving up the arch traitors Mason and Slidell…our government will keep them even though it cost a war with England. Things look warlike enough in New York…regiment after regiment is passing through our city for the South, hundreds of war vessels are being fitted out in our bay for Naval expeditions. Genl. Burnside is hear getting up an expedition which will be larger than the one which took Port Royal…will be ready to sail in a few days…Uncle Otis' eldest boy has gone to the war for three years." Unsigned, negligible loss on last sheet, else VG . Also included a 3pp. 8vo., letter on "The War For The Union" patriotic stationery, dated January 6, 1862 from "your affect. son, Rufus" concerning his law studies and varying concerns for his soldier brother.
