Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on Ohio state patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp Andrew Jackson near Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 28, 1862," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…I reached this part of Secessa on the 14th. We left Camp Wickliffe and march for 3 days when we reached West Point a small town on the Ohio, 20 [miles] below Louisville. We then embarked (Nelson's Division) on 18 large boats. Our regiment with Gen. Nelson & staff on the "Diana" a large 1st class New Orleans packet and down the Ohio we went…after a little while we went up the Cumberland…while on the boat we heard of our great victory at Donelson and the report is that Bowling Green was evacuated and were going to make a stand at Clarksville & Nashville…we passed Clarksville and the cry was Nashville. We were 3 miles below Nashville Monday night…Tuesday morning we passed Fort Zollicoffer a work deserted by the Confeds…with Gen. Nelson at our head our regiment entered Nashville and marched through several streets up to the state house and planted "Our Colors" on the State Capitol, ours being the first regiment in. We were received with the greatest friendship and at night camped out some 3 miles from town. In the afternoon of our arrival Gens. Bull & Mitchell came over from Edgefield…the next day we occupied in the transportation of Mitchell Division across the Cumberland. One old sea captain living in Nashville had the stars and stripes in a coverlid and on our arrival he brought it out and wave it to us and on the state house it floats now…if Mac does as well on the Pat [Peninsula] as Buell, Grant & Halleck did in this part of the world [then] 60 days will do the business for Davis & G[roup]. Enclosed please find a pice of Secessa flag floated over the State Capitol. You have ought to have seen the boys tear it to pieces…K. N. Cowing…". Near fine
