A wonderful Civil War letter, 4pp. 8vo., by New York City attorney and Harvard graduate Rufus Billing Cowing (1840-1920), New York [City], Mar. 7, 1862 to his mother, reading, in part: "…K is now in Nashville, Tennessee. His regiment had the honor of being the first one which landed at the city of Nashville. K is in Genl. Nelson's division…Nelson is a brave and noble man and he has taken a great liking to K's regiment…he with all his staff were on the boat with K's regiment…our cause goes on nobly as Missouri and Kentucky & part of Tennessee have been cleared of the rebels…from all that I can hear…they are having a hard fight down at Washington. We shall hear from there in a few days. I am going to write to K & tell him I am proud of him. He is a brave fellow…you should be delighted with him. He is bound to make his mark if God spares his life which I hope and pray He will. He sent me a piece of the rebel flag which was flying over the capitol in Nashville also some of the rebel money which I send to you…keep them as they will always be great curiosities…we all owe it to our country to try & maintain it…he is fighting in a righteous cause and if he dies he dies more noble than he who languishes in a bed of sickness. Our country must be preserved or we will lose all those rights which…we have prized. [George] Washington was willing to suffer and if need be die for what we now enjoy…we should not hesitate to do the same to preserve what…was bequeathed to us…Rufus." VG
