Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on Ohio state patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp Andrew Jackson near Nashville, Tenn., Mar 14, 1862," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…the Greys are still in the old camp…the visit of our division to the grave of Andrew Jackson. The Hermitage where Jackson was buried is situated on the Lebanon Pike about 10 miles from Nashville…our division marched along a very fine pike to the resting place of the Old Union man of Tenn. on a very bright day…and [as] the plantations [were] being broken up by the gangs of slaves the boys began to think we were really away down south in Dixie. The Hermitage is a very fine plantation and the grounds are in very fine order. The tomb of Jackson is situated about two hundred ids from the house in one corner of the garden. After staying about two hours and each regiment hav[ing] marched by the tomb we left…that Secesh flag [I sent in my last letter] was the one the 1st Tenn. Reg. [carried] in [the] Mexico [War] and [it] was torn up and made into a Rebel one…if you had seen the boys tear it up you would have thought I was luckily in getting what I did…Gen. Buell is very strict in his orders and allows only 5 men from a regiment [to] visit the city at once…we have received news of the evacuation [of] Manassas…the defeat of Price & Co. in Missouri and [of] the glorious news from [Admiral Samuel] Dupont…the general impression here is the Confederate States of America is a thing that was and not a thing that is…K. N. Cowing…". Near fine.
