Union volunteer's letter, 2 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp near Murfreesboro, Tenn., Feb. 24, 1863," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "Your welcome letter came to hand…all your arguments [are] carefully considered and although not convinced I am yet glad to know you do respect one who entertains a different opinion…I am very much grieved to think Uncle Charles has entered the Southern Army for he was much beloved by me…I hope it will turn out he has not entered the army. What regiment has Cousin Albert connected himself with…the army is still in its old position and there is every prospect of its staying here for some time…you asked…if by writing to my colonel would favor my promotion…it would on the contrary have the opposite effect…all military men think they know their duty better than any one…there are men in the regiment [who] deserve promotion more than I. We had a general salute fixed on the 22nd in honor of Washington…the regiment is on a forage expedition…K. N. Cowing." VG
