Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp near Murfreesboro, Tenn., Mar. 13, 1863," to his mother, in part: "…although tired of the war if by undergoing 10 times the hardships…it would help…[to] indicate to the world that man was capable of self government…[to] give up my life I would not hesitate one moment and my only regret would be for you and brother but…no people can be forced to be Free and if the South do not recognize the United States..it is useless to force them to it. When the war first broke out I believed that it was not the majority of the South…only part of the politicians who were striving for their own…advancement and when…Abraham Lincoln called for the people of the United States to uphold the constitution I thought it was the duty of every American Citizen to offer…his life in its support, but when the president issued the Emancipation Proclamation I thought and still do think he was going beyond his office and deserved impeachment…there is too much rebellion in the North-Greely, Phillips & all…deserve hanging as traitors…if I had my chance I would exterminate them instead of allowing them to live in luxury…you asked me if Uncle Otis gave me his permission to enter the service. No-Uncle Eustace said I was old enough to judge for myself. I do not know of any honorable way of get[ting] a discharge…I remember how you used to serve me when I ran away. I have indistinct recollection of getting…a dose of Doctor Birch…that was nothing to the tricks big brother…used to play me…when we meet again I will pay him up…K. N. Cowing." VG.
