Union volunteer's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp near Murfreesboro, Tenn., Mar. 21, 1863," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "…I learnt that you had been admitted to the bar…I hope you may have a large practice soon…do not…enter the army. One is enough…if you are drafted pay 300 and not go. I will give 1/3 and…mother would do all she could…I…have never…been under the care of the surgeon. I enlisted and was sworn in for 3 yrs…on the 18th day of June 1861…I suppose the government will 'conscript' us old soldiers…if they do I…will never fight for such a government …Rosecrans reviewed the 21st Army Corps two days ago. The army is in splendid condition and will show the rebels in Richmond that the West do not want anything to do with them…we have nearly 60,000 effective men…I do not think any 100,00 rebels could whip us…we will not advance for some time yet…we will be governed by the success…at Vicksburg…our regiment is growing some. Many of the wounded are back and we rations for 330 men…Col. Anderson…is very well liked by the regiment. I get along splendid with all my companions and officers…never had any difficulty with any of them…K. N. Cowing…". VG
