Union volunteer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Kirkland Newton Cowing (1843-1863, KIA Chickamauga, Ga. Sept. '63), Co. A, 6th Ohio Vols., "Camp near Murfreesboro, Tenn., Apr. 10, 1863," to his brother attorney and New York City judge Rufus B. Cowing, in part: "Your letter found me on a scouting expedition. Our brigade left its camp on the 2nd April and reached Woodbury on the 3rd…taking possession of the Burg after a slight fight. After staying in that vicinity for 2 days trying…to get a fight out of the rebels…the Rebs refused to fight during Easter. We marched toward…Bradyville. Our Reg. having the advance and "A" Co. being 1st and K. N. C. being foremost we came in sight of the place about noon…only our company being allowed the…pleasure of entering the town which consisted of 4 frame houses, 1 haystack and a grocery. The inhabitants were 1 dog, 2 cats and ! female with about 5 small children. The lady was very inquisitive and informed us theta her husband was in…Murfreesboro in the hands of the Yankees….we have orders to be ready to move at any moment and the pickets have instructions to take knapsacks, canteens, haversacks and…everything so that in case of marching orders their return to camp will be unnecessary…K.
