A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert McCarty, Co. F, 11th Mass. Vols., James River, Va., July 31, 1862, to an attorney looking of help in recovering his land bounty, in part: "…I have served 5 years in the regular army now there is a land warrant of one hundred and 60 acres coming to me. I have served 3 years in the boundary lines between Mexico and the United States. I served 53 till 58. I have served 14 months in the last Florida war under Gen. Al. Harney, left Florida and went to Salt Lake City. Had hard service there for 10 months. I belonged to the 5th Infantry. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Weat iges [Weitzel?]. He is now general. I belonged to C company. The company was commanded by Thomas Neill [Brig. Gen. Thomas Hewson Neill]. He was captain. I was honorably discharged by the colonel…at Utah Fort Bridges…my discharged was also signed by General [Joseph] Johnston. I am serving in the volunteers for the protection of the country. I belong to the 11th Massachusetts Volunteers. I am now aging on the James river…what mite charge me for recovering my land…let me now what your charge will be and…I will employ you to recover it for me…Robert McCarty, Company F, 11 Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers…". McCarty's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
