War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on "Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. William Crawford, Co. B, 73rd Penn. Vols. [WIA Chancellorsville 5/02/63 & POW Missionary Ridge, Tenn., 11/25/63], Frederick, [Maryland], Feb. 7, 1862, in part: "…we have been called out twice to leave for the field but it happened to be a small skirmish and the road was so bad and the weather unpleasant that we did not go…we hold ourselves in readiness for any moments notice…you wished to know about Blackos dath. He was seak [weak] for several months until two or three days before he died. He lived a miserable and unhappy life up till his death. I oft times conversed with him on the manner he lived, but it was for no use. He would still curse and swear until God finely struck the blow. He died very suddenly, unprepared two days before he died he complained of being weak and he answered to his name the night before he died and before the light of another day he was found in his bunk stiff dead. So this is the life of the ungodly…[stenciled Wm. C. Crawford]…". Also included is the original stamped patriotic transmittal envelope. Light soiling, else VG.
