War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Morris Baxter, Co. B, 7th Ohio Vols., [MWIA Ringgold, Ga., 11/27/63 as 1st Lieut. & Adjt. Buried Chattanooga National Cemetery], Camp Tyler, Edinburgh, Va., April 15, 1862, in part: "…everything is pretty quite…except the rebels opening their cannons on us once in awhile. Yesterday they came in sight and fired six shells at us but our batteries soon silenced them. We can see them everyday from our camp. They come out of the woods on the other side of the river…they never come within range of our muskets. I have no idea when we will make another move…Gen. Shields was out and reviewed us…last Saturday. He is very weak yet from the wound he received at Winchester. We have great confidence in him and I think he is a better General than General Banks…Morris." The original stamped transmittal cover, to his father, is included. VG
