A great war-date strongly Northern leaning Kentuckian's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by attorney Hector V. Loving (1839-?) Hamilton College, New York, Class 1859, partner law firm Rode & Loving, president Louisville Safety Vault and Trust Company, Bowling Green, KY, July 31, 1862 to his friend future Union officer Harlan P. Lloyd, in part: "…I then began to read law and in the winter of 60 and 61 attended the Law school at Louisville, Ky. At the close of the lectures I returned home and…began to fight secession and treason upon the streets and occasionally upon the stump. At that time the public mind was very much excited. Discussions were growing veer violent and frequently terminated in serious difficulties. The storm of fanaticism and treason was already blowing with terrible force over Ky. sweeping down before it almost the entire body of young men throughout the state…and distinguished men who ought to have garnered some wisdom…the secessionists, in our midst…sugar coated their treason with the…title of "Southern Rights" were growing very bold and insulting, backed and supported…by the numerous military camps that Tennessee had planted along our southern border for the purpose of catching renegade Kentuckians and intimidating loyal citizens. The soldiers from the camps were frequently strolling through our town and discussions by loyal men were getting very dangerous…their voices were stopped when Buckner with his troops occupied B. Green about the middle of September…the Union men were very much afraid of being forced into the Rebel army…my father [Hon. William V. Loving] was so much afraid that the young men would be driven into the service…that he was quite anxious for me to attempt to get through the lines and…reach Louisville and finish…law school…against my wishes…I…got through and graduated…just after the evacuation of this place by the rebels. I returned home to find my once beautiful town partially burned…and the side walks and streets in a very filthy condition…I formed a partnership in the practice of law with Mr. [Robert]Rodes…I am the town attorney, but not under the provost marshall, as I was chosen by the board of trustees…our courts have all been opened since the Federal Army occupied this place but owing to the uncertain condition of affairs and the feverish excitement constantly prevailing people have not yet gained full confidence but as soon as the Rebel army is driven out of Tenn…Ky. will be no more troubled by the guerrillas bands that occasionally invade their soil to steal, rob and murder. You ask me of Wright…he is a very violent "secesh"…H. V. Loving." Slight mouse chew affecting left margin, else VG
