War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 12 mo., written, on patriotic (Long May It Wave) stationery, by Corp. David F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Illinois Vols., Otterville, [Mo.], Jan. 8, 1862, to his friend Fanny, reading, in part: "…if you were in a fight with that terrible revolving five shooter, back action, pop gun you would do awful execution among the enemy. I recon Davy Crocket couldn't hold a candle to you…I hope you will never have occasion to use it as the fearful execution might shock your sensitive nerves. I should much sooner hear you make one of your famous speeches than traveling around a la Don Quixote. I should like to send you some of our bread but have no chance. It is awful…the Government ought to build tents out of it…cannon balls…would never enter…there is not much danger of an overdose as we get tired gnawing at them before we get our fill. I hope we will commence drawing flour…so we can make our own bread. I great deal of the hard bread is made out of shorts and probably some mill sweepings to give it the proper consistency…direct D. F. McGowan, Co. I, 47th Regt. Ills., Vols…". VG
