A good war-date letter, 1p. 8vo., written by future volunteer aide-de-camp to General Nathaniel Banks William Sturgis Hooper who died on Sept. 24, 1863, Boston, May 10, 1862 concerning family member Phil's escaping the casualty lists fro Williamsburg, Va., in part: "We were rejoiced last night at finding in the N. Y. Times a list of the killed & wounded of Phil's battery in the battle of Williamsburg. Both the lieutenants were severely wounded-one losing his leg-but Phil & the Capt. not mentioned. So we feel perfectly easy about him…a letter from Powell Mason…saying that Phil's battery has been in the thick of it with heavy loss & that being himself kept in the rear with Genl. Porter he had not been able to hear anything of Phil. I see that the Battery lost more men than either of the other batteries mentioned…W. Sturgis Hooper." Near fine.
