A Union soldier’s letter on Massachusetts patriotic lettersheet, written by “Charlie” with original Mass Vols cover to his mother , Charleston, Mass. the 4pp., letter is datelined Budds Ferry, Lower Potomac, Maryland, Nov. 24. In part, “General McClellan is coming down the river tomorrow to review us & to see the rebels. Co. I and Co. E of the 11th have been building a large battery just below Budds. They are going to plant 4 32pounders & some mortars behind it to knock their batteries down on the other side, They fired nine shells at us the other day but none hit the batterys ... I was picking up some pieces of shell out of a hole when another shell whizzed over my head. great many burst over our heads. .. they threw a 42lb ball into it last night just as we had finished it was going home. ....”
