Bound volume Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, 41 complete issues, ranging from April 30, 1861 through Feb. 15, 1862. Each issue typically 16 pages, heavy in artwork and war text. We’ll describe the front pages to give the buyer a flavor of the issues. Count on plenty of war coverage and on-the-scene illustrations for which this publication is famous, with many well-known artists who made their names during this crisis time in America. Volume has been disbound with some issues missing (see below). Expect foxing, spotting, etc., generally in good condition. April 30: Fighting between soldiers and citizens of Baltimore as troops pass through the city en route to the Capitol. This first issue has separated from binding, o/w all right. May 4: Art of Col. R.C. Hawkins recruiting for NY Zouaves. Also, illustration of tattered U.S. flag after bombardment at Fort Sumpter. May 11: Art of reinforcing sites at Fort Pickens. May 18: The Winans Steam gun captured by Butler’s forces. May 25: The Bouqet Battery guards the viaduct at the Patapsco River. Inside, copious scenes from Camp Cameron. June 1: Collectible issue on notorious murder of Col. Elmer Ellsworth of the NY Fire Zouaves in Baltimore. Assassination covered inside with double truck. June 8: Murder of John Swain by Samuel Merritt following political argument. Inside, full page art and text on the death of the “Little Giant,” Stephen Douglas. Double truck collage art of negroes seeking refuge at Fortress Monroe. June 15: Soldiers work on the breastworks at Alexandria, Va. June 22: Art/text on Battle of Great Bethel. Great double truck art inside on the battle. June 29: Clash of soldiers and citizens in St. Louis, Mo. July 6: Arrest of Marshall Kane for treason. July 13: Marshall Kane in custody being guarded by cannon. July 20: Major Taylor escorted back to Rebel lines after delivering letters from Jefferson Davis to President Lincoln, Double truck of Battle of Rich Mountain. July 27: Battle of Rich Mountain. Aug. 3: Battle of Bull’s Run, Va. Much more inside. Aug. 10: Curfew bells ordering negroes back to quarters in Hampton Court House. Inside, great full page of Col. Lewis Wallace (author of “Ben Hur”) astride horse in western Va. Aug. 17: Rebel troops burn village of Hampton, Va. Aug. 24: Battle at Wilson’s Creek, Mo. Aug. 31: Gen. Rosecrans’ division moves against Rebel entrenchments at Rich Mountain. Inside: Great battle at Wilson’s Creek. Sept. 7: Art/text of Popular, or People’s, Loan to the Federal Government. Sept. 14: Incidents of camp life for soldiers. Sept. 21: Detachment of NY Rifles fire on Co. D of their own regiment. Sept. 28: Federal troops forage in chaos on a farm in Missouri. Inside art of seven ballet dancers burning in “frightful scene” at Continental Theatre in Philadelphia. Oct. 5: Naval exploits in Pensacola Harbor. Oct. 12: Soldiers raid “secesh oats” from barn during march to Cape Girardeau. Inside: Battle of Lexington, Mo. Oct. 19: Missing. Oct. 26: “Treed Rebel,” depicts capture of Rebel Lt. Segal near Falls Church. Nov. 2: Cooking in camp with the Fremont Dragoons. Inside: Morning muster of “contrabands” (blacks) at Fort Monroe. Nov. 9: Death of Col. E.D. Baker, U.S. Senator of Oregon, at Battle of Ball’s Heights. Nov. 16: Crime scene of wealthy diamond merchant found dead in New Jersey with 19 stab wounds to the heart. His killer also depicted.
