A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on U. S. Christian Commission stationery, by Pvt. James Hiram Jones, Co. I, 24th Mass. Vols., [WIA Darbytown Road, VA 10/13/64], "near Richmond, Va., Oct. 27, 1864, to sister, in part: "…I am in my tent alone…my health is good except my wound [is] pretty sore…I shall be round soon…our regt. has gone [on] another…expedition…I hope they will come out better then they did the 13th of this month. [Where he was wounded during the battle of Darbytown Road.] We lost 14 men that day out [of] 137 that's rather hard…the order came to be ready at half past 2 to march 3 days…David Hoxie…is on the Weldon rode [on] the south side of Petersburg…you need not take any notice of Black gurding you about your heifer. I suppose it is all right…you can tell Sarah Lawrence that [The following was crossed out with pencil.] [I] git my fingers be shit pretty often but a soldier's turd is very harmless it mad fore grub…I understand…that you are going to be married this fall to a cod fisherman…I don't suppose you know what a cod fisherman claims for profession…it is sheet of ginger bread that kept him from being drafted…I understand that he is boldged [hernia] and humpback…give my love to mother. Tell her not to worry…I shall look out for number one…if you see Zenas [Hoxie's] folks you can tell them…I was very much surprised when [he] came to our company. He arrived the next day after I was wounded. He is a good soldier…Lem is corporal. He got his commission last night, high birth that Hoxie and I keep him [?] which keeps him shouting all the time.
