A good war-date Union home front letter written by the father of Lieut. Frank B. James, Co. I, 52nd Ohio Vols., 4pp. 4to., Cincinnati, Oh., Nov. 15, 1863, in part: "…we had a great deal of fun on Sunday…Mr. Flint employed about 50 boys to carry guns (muskets) from the city building to the school (Mr. Flint is Capt. of a Militia Co.)…to punish a boy he does it in several ways. He takes a piece of Ratan about 20 inches long and bends it back so it will spring…when he sees a boy talking he lets it spring…hits the boy on the head…[Nov. 24, 1863]…we had information of the movement to Lookout Mt…we had no idea that you were in it…neither do I understand how your brigade escaped mention in Thomas' & Howard's complimentary notices…let us know more about it…my business it is indeed improving…this last week the N. F. has done well. I sold S. E. & Co. 110 Bbls…I shall probably make, say 600. There is a little difficulty in keeping out of hot water with the trade…I am somewhat inclined to solve the trouble by turning contractor…the chief objection to that is now removed by the Q. M. understanding that the bids are made for an improved article, as I could now safely say that mine is not…we will see what [is] to be done when the present lot is delivered. I feel tempted, as it might lead to more extended relations, to supply department…Thorp thought money could be made under an appointment as purveyor of a division. What do you think…your mother has become a leading member of the Society of her church…it is really very pleasant to observe what efficiency she develops & what happens…you know what a remarkable amount of sewing she can do. You have no idea of the number of the garments she makes up for the society…[she] does a very meritorious work in the support of that good old home missionary…as soon as you become a major general…what is the state of your Co. F as to self care, drill & general efficiency. How does it rank in the Regt & how much credit is it doing its new commander…D[avid] A. J." VG
