SABATO MORAIS (1823-1897) Italian-born famous rabbi, succeeded Leeser 1851 as rabbi of Mikveh Israel in Phila. Was a major force in American Judaism for the rest of the century. Two pages (each blank on reverse) note penned entirely in his very tiny, but easily read, hand with his autograph signature. Phila., Nov. 1, 1865 to Rabbi S. M. Isaacs. "As you may suppose, I deeply feel the loss of a man so great and so good as Prof. Luzzatto [Samuel David Luzzatto, founder of Modern Jewish Scholarship and the Forerunner of Zionism who had died in Italy a few months earlier]…I consider it the duty of every Jew, who has the ability, to pay to his memory a tribute of respect. I exceedingly regret that it is beyond my power to furnish your readers with his biography. I believe that the lamented author wrote it some years since for the 'Magged' but I don't subscribe to that paper and have been shown only a few numbers of it. Yet I am anxious to say a few words on the mournful subject and will as soon as my official duties will permit, comply with your request." Light aging. Exc. Fine example of his writing. Very scarce.
