War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Gustavus B. Williams, Co. K, 51st Mass. Vols., Evan's Mills, N. C., June 18,1863, in part: "…yesterday I was at the city. An ambulance came for Orderly, Ide, two privates and me to testify in trails of two men for sleeping when on guard. One was discharged the other tried but not sentenced. The latter was Waldo…I trust he may have a light sentence…as I was unwillingly the principal witness against him being Sergt. of [the] guard when he was found asleep. I rode back after the trial in the ambulance. After the trial I…visited the camp of the 25[th Mass.]. Saw Charles & William Seagrave also C. E. Benson [Charles E. Benson POW Drewry's Bluff, Va., 5/16/64]and Sullivan Cook [Joseph Sullivan Cook WIA Arrowfield Church, Va., 5/9/64]…the 5 Mas. Reg are about starting and we are to go on the return of the transports…there is a report to tonight that the 5 Mass. have mutinied refusing to shovel as they demand discharge. Other Regs may be sent before them on account of the trouble for it is worse than useless for soldiers to demand rights. We shall know more perhaps what will be their punishment…Gustavus." VG
