War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ray D. Morgan, Co. I, 26th New York Vols., [POW 2nd Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], "Camp of the 26th Regt. N. Y. Vols., Feb. 15, 1863, in part: "…I have just come in from picket and it rains very hard and it is so lonesome…we are on picket two days in 6…thare is 1900 men from this division on picket every day so…we have enough to go to keep us out of mischief…if the army can live through this weather they will do well…it takes 10 horses 6 hours to move 500 Ibs of provision 5 miles….we are close to the river so we are better supplied than the most of the army…why don't the army move, Why don't they take Richmond…let them come here and they will point out all they wish to know…you say I must take all the comfort I can for all the girls are getting married…as for the girls I say bully for them…it don't make any difference to me for thare is lots of them here in Dixie of all colors…you ask if I see any hard times this winter. No certainly not. We soldiers hardly know the meaning of the words…R. D. Morgan…". VG
