A Union soldier’s letter written by “W(illiam) Stowe” who enlisted 5/7/1861 into F company VT. 2nd Infantry and was KIA at the Wilderness 5/5/1864. The 8 page penciled letter is datelined Camp Near White Oak Church Va, may 10, 1863. In part, “I don’t know what success Hooker met with on his line .. we got no reinforcements and the rebels were strengthened by Longstreet. ... During the night the enemy got on the heights... we had some hard fighting Monday and Monday night... we was engaged by the Mississippi brigade commanded by Gen. Early. ... Our regiment had to fight like mad men to take the heights but we were good for it. ... the rebels came on a charge bayonet but they got mistaken in their plans ... the Col. of one of their regiments was killed 5 rods from me. ... it was enough to make one’s blood run cold ... they melted like dew on the grass ... “
