A Union soldier’s letter written by “John Snyder” who enlisted on 10/12/1861 as a private into "E" Co. PA 78th Infantry. The 4pp., letter is datelined Murfreesboro, Tenn. January the 23, 1863. In part, “I will let you know that we was in a mighty hard battle at Stone River within 3 miles of Murfreesboro. We was fighting for nine days as hard as we could fight on the tenth day we went into Murfreesboro. ... Our old regiment, what was left of it, was in town first but there was not much left of it. We lost over 200 men out of our regiment. We lost 27 out of our company. Phenis Marsh was wounded and Lieutenant J. H. Anchors was wounded and Christian Snyder was wounded and taken prisoner. He is a brother to George Snyder which was killed at Fredericksburg.... I suppose you will hear of our great charge that we made. We charged and took a battery from the Rebels and when we took it, we turned on them and gave them hell with it. We gave them a darn good whipping but we had to fight for it. We took the colors from the 4th Florida regiment. We shot 5 color bearers before they gave it up and when we shot the 5th one, they let the flag go and run the the devil and us after them hollering ... we drove them mighty often and whipped them so bad that they run from Murfreesboro like stray sheep .... They are gone 30 miles from here and are going to make a stand at Talalms and I expect we will have the fight there again, but I hope not for we will not have a good chance at they there. I hope they will move on to Chattanooga so we can fight them with artillery. It is very hilly there and infantry has a good chance to save themselves....’
