Union soldier’s letter written by A(ustin) F(enn) who enlisted on 7/22/1862 as a private into "H" Co. VT 10th Infantry, June 16-18 (1863), Maryland, 4pp., .written to his wife with original cover. In part,” ... we were called to march to ... Camp Heintzelman. .. Our men got the worst of a skirmish at Harpers Ferry and Lees army is said to be coming up that way so we are ready here to ...skedaddle to Washington if they are too strong for us. Joe Hooker is within 7 or 8 miles of Washington they say and is coming in the rear of the rebels ... we are waiting... to start for any place we are ordered ... One of our Lieutenants and a Cavalry Lieutenant were taken prisoner last night three miles from here ... Rebs are bound to make a raid into Maryland to get some more horses ... we were all called out to repel an attack last night... the Rebs are amking a hell of a rush somewhere. They are now nearly North of us. I suppose there is great excitment North about his time. I hope they will raise hell with some places... now’s the time for the Copperheads to join them. I wonder how they like the looks of the Southern Chivalry. I wonder if they will share their fortunes. ... Probably this is a great raid of the Rebels to destroy property, steal horses, plunder and make and great sound. Their course is desparate. The government has stopped shipping supplies...they are afraid of them being captured by the enemy. ... VG.
