Union soldier’s letter written by Austin Fenn who enlisted on 7/22/1862 as a private into "H" Co. VT 10th Infantry, March 7, 1865, Camp South of Petersburg, 5pp., written to his wife. In part, “Sheridan has been giving the rebels some more lessons .. Old General Lee has got all he wants to attend to ... The rebellion I think will be like a dying horse. It will kick and thrash around until the last breath ... no medicine can save it. The last remedy they have thought of was to arm their slaves. But I guess all they will arm will be a few and the less the better for them. ... We have been called out to witness a sight as the 3rd division was never called out before. And was a shooting a deserter. It was a sight I dont fancy but he deserved it and many more deserve the same that dont get it. It is a big help to us for the North to send their bounty jumpers down here. The old soldiers have the Rebels to fight and them to shoot.
