War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Robert Henry Greenfield, Co. I, 1st New York Dragoons, White House Landing, [Va.], March 19, 1865, to his wife, in part: "…it has been 20 days since we have had any communication with any of our folks…this is the hardest raid that we have ever been on…the Spring's campaign is opened two month sooner then it did last year…our company is at brigade headquarters doing provost duty…we have not had any battle of any account yet. General [George Armstrong] Custer division captured all of the Rebel army at Waynesboro and our loss was very small, but three men killed and several wounded. The Rebels lost heavy…I saw many dead on the field. We do not know how long we will lay here…the next place I think will be the James River where we went last summer…Robert H. Greenfield." The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
