A principal exponent of the reform movement, Rabbi Gustavus Poznanski became leader of the Charleston Congregation of Beth Elohim in 1836 and two years later was elected to serve for life…but it didn't turn out that way. Discord in that congregation on the question of reform, and finally the installation of an organ violently split the members, causing Poznanski to resign…to be replaced by Julius Eckman of Richmond. This single sheet (both sides) neatly penned (in a small, readable hand) letter by Nath'l Levin, an influential member of the Jewish community and one of the earliest to chronicle the history of the Jews of that city, written from Charleston April 15, 1851 to Isaac Leeser, poignantly describes the rather sordid affair. He specifically requests that Leeser print the details and the "sketch of Dr. Eckman" in his next issue of the Occident "placing it in some conspicuous place" and if he can't do that to "forward it to the editor of the ASMONEAN:" "Dr. E. is opposed by several of his congregation who are tied hand and foot to Poznanski and his INFIDEL OPINIONS. Poznanski thought he could mold Eckman to his will and make him the promulgator of his infamous dogma, but the latter shrunk from the contact and he boldly and fearlessly denounced him and his infidelity. As an impartial listener I have given my views, thinking they may benefit Dr. E. whom I believe [is] a truly pious and honest man, his whole…object of life being to benefit his people and is endeavoring to make them conform to the Holy religion of their Fathers." Levin describes Dr. E.'s "lofty and sublime thoughts and well condensed arguments." Discussing his relationship with Leeser he consoles him with: "…I hope to hear of your reinstatement at the spiritual head of [your] congregation…I have been defending you here against the vile aspersions of your enemies, among whom you can enumerate the Rev. Jacob Rosenfeld, the applicant for your place who I suppose has taken umbrage at the remarks in a previous 'Occident'…he is beneath your contempt and we shall soon get rid of him, so don't notice him anymore…" Normal light aging; few tiniest short tears in the outer blank margin; exc. +. Very important insight into the affairs of that famous Jewish community.
