A great war-date Union officer's letter, 1p. 8vo., written, on printed "Head Quarters Department of Virginia and North Carolina" stationery, by 1st Lt. Sidney B. DeKay [8th Conn. Vols.], In the field, Aug. 18, 1864 to Baltimore Confederate Annie C. Thomas. Her husband was Maryland Legislator John Hanson Thomas who actively sought to influence the secession of Maryland in 1861.. Elder Thomas was arrested and imprisoned by Lincoln following the suspension of the Writ of Habeas Corpus. Her sons both served the Confederacy. Lt. J. Hanson Thomas served under Johnston during the Atlanta campaign. Her other son Lt. Raleigh C. Thomas served on General Loring's staff during the Franklin campaign. Lt. J. Hanson Thomas was captured sometime during the Atlanta campaign. He was eventually sent to Johnson Island Prison camp. This letter, friendly in nature, reads, in part: "Allow me to express the hope that you will ask of me the value of the stamps I sent you…I obtained them merely for the purpose of keeping them as a curiosity…and as I can…obtain more from Maj. Ould at anytime. I hope you will accept them without hesitation. With many assurances that our correspondence has been any thing but "troublesome". Also included is the letter's stamped transmittal cover which will certainly be of philatelic interest being a rare pre-printed: "Head Quarters. Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina." Both in excellent condition.
