Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William S. Ellsworth, Co. G, 1st Louisiana (Union) Cavalry, Morganza, La., July 9, 1864, in part: "…we are on the Mississippi river twenty five miles about Port Hudson. The 114 [N. Y.] regt has bin camped close buy us…we have seen some hard times this summer hard marching and fighting…I have stood it so far first rate. It is veer sickly hear in the army. Thare is a good many got the small pox…[on] the fourth…I will tell you whare I went. Our Co. was escort for a flag of truce. We went twenty miles up the river before we found the rebs. It was to see about an exchange of prisoners…my time will be out eleven months from tomorrow. We have a chance to enlist as veterans but I think I shall come home…they are having hard fighting in Virginy now. I hope Grant will be successful…if he is I do not think the war will last much longer…W, S. Ellsworth." VG.
