Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. William S. Ellsworth, Co. G, 1st Louisiana (Union) Cavalry, "Head Quarters First La. Cavalry, Feb. 27, 64," in part: "…we are getting ready for the spring campaign which we are about ready to open. The report is that a heavy cavalry force under Brigadier Gen. Sill is going to form a junction with the army in Texas by the way of Red river…we shall have some fighting to do. The rebels have a strong force between here and thare. I was a prisoner for two months. It does not seem as if they could hold out much longer. All that they Confederate army subsists on is corn and beef and that is getting scarce as a portion of their supplies is cut off from Texas…they say they will fight as long as thare is any of them left…Christmas was the day I was exchanged and [when I] got inside of our lines it was a merry Christmas for me…Wll. direct to William Ellsworth, 1 La Cavalry, New Orleans in care of Capt. F[rancis] M. Ives." Minor toning, else VG.
