Single page, neatly penned (8 x 10) letter entirely in the hand of and signed by member of prominent Louisiana Jewish family H. Labatt to Isaac Leeser as editor of the "OCCIDENT" from New Orleans, October 27, 1852: "During the present political campaign, among our most prominent men are found some of our [own] creed, the Hon. J. P. Benjamin, U.S. Senator Elect, a Whig and Hon. E. W. Moise, State Elector, a Democrat and ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives. Many have assailed them by slurs upon their religious tenets and I forward to you the reply of the latter gentlemen [not included] to one of those petty attacks. It is very beautiful and will be appreciated by all who have the good fortune to read it. …Some time ago a similar document was transmitted relative to attack upon J. P. Benjamin, so you may see by this that it is no party feeling alone, but a desire on both sides to underrate political standing by the standard of Religion." Two small rust marks at top of page where paperclips once affixed. A few very light brown spots but not obscuring any wording. Pages 3 and 4 blank. Significant insight into politics of that presidential campaign year.
