A good war-date Union officer's letter, 1p. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. Barton M. Stetler, Co. A, 143rd Penn. Vols., "Camp of the 143d P. V., Aug. 6, 1864", in part: "…we have nothing to do…but eat, sleep, a little picket duty and fatigue…I miss my numerous friends who have been killed and wounded…I often sit in sober thoughts and consider the mysterious workings of providence. There are but three of the original boys from W_B_[Wilkes-Barre] left. There is no infantry firing in our front…since morning there has not been more than 25 shells thrown among our brigade and only one killed and three wounded, one mortally…I wish you were here, but think that I want to see you drafted…I know you would enjoy yourself well…your friend, B. M. Stetler, 2d Lieut., Co. A, 143d P. V., 1st Brig., 1st Div., 5th Corps, Washington, D. C.". Minor spotting, else VG.
