A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Corp. John Baker, Co. I, 78th Ohio Vols. "Camp near Big Shanty, Georgia, June 29, 1864", in part: "…I think it is queer that you and Lib cannot get along with out quarreling and as for Lib getting that wring it lays between you and her…for my part I never told her that she should have it. When I give a thing to a girl I never expect her to give it to any body. When you get tired of it give it to me…we have have been fighting for 3 weeks more or less. We have [been] laying pretty quiet for the last 2 days. Last night [actually the night before] the rebs made a charge on the wright of our line and lost over 1 thousand killed. We do not know how many of them were wounded for at break of day they had all of their wounded carried off and left the dead laying. Our loss was very slight. Our regt. has lost very few. We have had some 8 or 9 killed and something in 20 wounded. We have lost one 1 of our company and he was shot dead. T. C. Starr [Sgt. Thomas C. Starr KIA 6/14/64, Big Shanty] from New Lisbon. Your brothers are both well…Jno. Baker…direct your letters to Big Shanty, Georgia." Light toning else, near fine
