Union soldier/sailor William Henderson writes a, 3pp. 8vo., letter from Beaufort, S. C., to his friend John C. Stevens of Philadelphia about the first expedition against Fort Fisher, North Carolina, in part: "…there is quite a change here…the troops have all left. They went out yesterday with flying colors and fine music for Wilmington. There were eight large steamer[s] load[ed] besides the navy. They commenced firing this morning at 3 o'clock and kept it up till tonight and stopped for a space of an hour but have commenced again…I am in hopes before you read this you will hear of its capture. John there is nothing to do here in your business…as the work was all government work, wages about 60 per month…Mary P. Hudson…was sent on the blockade fleet just one week before I received your letter…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor soiling, else VG
