A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Capt. William J. Holden, Co. B, 64th Ohio Vols., "Headquarters, Co. B, 64th O. V. I., Black Creek, Block House, Ala., Feb. 21, 1865, in part: "…I thank you very much for your congratulations upon my promotion & I will…act while in the army that if I am spared to get home that I will not be ashamed to own that I was a soldier…I am still at the old Block house…I have very pressing invitations from a dozen pretty country girls to call on them & get acquainted…there is [a] handsome soldier in Ala…so..I think that I shall call on some of them…I might marry some large plantation & go into the Cotton speculation as there is plenty of chance & lots of them are doing it here…I was very sorry to hear of Peter's death [Peter Holden, Co. B, 12th Penn. Cavalry, POW June 29, 1864. Died as POW Andersonville, 10/09/64. Buried grave # 10571] but indeed he did die in a glorious cause. Those that have sacrificed their lives on this cause of freedom will always be remembered, not only by their friends but by the…world with honor…I cannot mourn his loss like those that are at home for they cannot take the interest in the cause for which he gave his life like I can. You should not mourn for him more than possible…Lieut. W. J. Holden…". Also included is the original transmittal cover. VG
