War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a member of Co. D, of the 189th New York Vols., "Camp near Petersburg, Va., Jan. 5, 1865," in part: "…we go out on picket once in a while…it [is] impossible for the army is to move now the roads are so bad and they will not be better in a long time…I am a rough soldier boy and at times very badly demoralized…I suppose there is to be another draft and I fear that one draft will not be all…they will call for men enough to satisfy the most patriotic…I think there will be more than one more draft before we conquer the Johneys, but still…everything looks more favorable now than at any other time since the war began…when our time is played out the rebellion will be in the same fix…they are trying to fill the quota by paying larger bounties. I hope they will have good sweeps for I don't want any of my friends to come down here…I hope I will be spared…we have got t[w]o of the meanest lieutenants that ever was suffered to live…we have one thing to console us and that is that Capt. Hills will soon be with us and another is that [the] God forsaken [1st Lt.] Charles Searl happens to be under arrest for disobeying orders while on picket…it will cost him his commission…we are now under the command of that cobbler [2nd Lt.] Lt.
