A good war-date Pennsylvania Bucktail's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Silas Thurston, Co. F, 149th Penn. Vols., [POW Camp], Elmira, [N. Y.], Mar 27, 1865 to his brother Lt William H. Thurston, Battery F, (Ricketts Battery), 1st Penn. Light Artillery, in part: "…we are kept busy and the high water destroyed the railroad so that we did not get our mail…we are out side of the guards in our barrack and can go through the city anytime, but we must lookout for the patrol…three weeks ago we took a lot of recruits to York city and whilst I was asleep I had 63 dollars…stolen from me now I am without money…Elmira is not much of a place. The buildings are scattered very much and not of the best either…nearly every house is either a grog shop or whore house and lots of soldiers all around. Theres a good many coming in out of the draft. One of our boys shot a leg off one of the substitutes here for calling him a son of a bitch when he was on guard…I am a going to try and get home one of these times when we take recruits down…I will jump off of the cars and go out to see [the] old folks and be back to take the next train. A[mos] H. Williams fixed it that way…I hope this war will play out before we get back to the front…Silas Thurston, Co. F, 149th Regt. Pa., Vols…". VG
