Beautifully penned single page (blank reverse) letter from Rabbi M. N. Nathan who embraced a long career leading the Jewish communities of Kingston, Jamaica and St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands and ultimately New Orleans. Writes to Leeser from London, England Nov. 21, 1854 relating his emergency visit to that country due to death of his wife's brother…which left him with the responsibility of care of the "…young widow and three helpless babes…I am committed to their future care." Had that not happened, he "…probably would have been again in America, the Country, par excellence, in my and my wife's ideas. But it was not to be. Jamaica will be henceforth my abode, not from choice, but [from] circumstances. My heart is too full and my brain too busy to write more." Mentions not receiving bible ordered from Leeser, but if the post office returns it, wishes it sent on to Jamaica and ask that all letters to him be forwarded through a friend Mr. H. S. Henry in New York City. Ends with sending his regards to various Philadelphians" and "Miss Gratz." Light aging, exc. +. Back sheet acts as postal cover with address and surcharge.
